Taiyuan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. is an extra-large iron and steel conglomerate and the biggest stainless steel producer in China. It owns advanced equipment and technologies in mining and dressing iron ore and other raw material, in scrap processing and in manufacturing the metallurgical equipment and spare parts, and operates with a full process stainless steel producing system starting from smelting, refining, continuous casting, hot rolling and cold rolling, of capacity up to 5.0 million tons per annum.
During August 2000 - 2003 TISCO upgraded its
stainless steel system and expanded its cold-rolled sheet production system to
both of which the latest equipment and technologies were introduced, completing
the projects in a fast-paced, quality-guaranteed and economy-focused manner. Of
the steel-making system K-OBM-S was refurnished with patented combined blown
technology and equipment, 30t ultra-power EAF, 80t LF, 75t VOD, CCM and other
necessary facilities were built, making a full-functioned converter-route
stainless steel production line; for the hot strip mill system, a powerful
4-high reversible roughing mill with sizing press, a hydraulic coiler, a
horizontal banding machine and an automatic marking machine were built and TDC
computer control technology was for the first time applied to hot strip mill,
contributing to automatic operation of rolling process. The cold rolling system
was completed with slitting line, grinding line and 2m roll grinder of which
the technological equipment and product quality are leading in the world. An
annual capacity of 1 million tons stainless steel is resulted.
In September 2004 the state authority approved new stainless steel construction project in TISCO. The new project pursues the latest equipment and technologies in combination, including 160t EAFs, 180t converter, 180t AODs, 180t LF; three CCMs each capable of casting slab up to 2150mm wide with straight-bow casting design and online hot grinding technologies in use; a 2250 hot strip mill train, the biggest ever in stainless steel sector of the world; an HAPL of 1.15 million-ton capacity and a CAPL of half million ton capacity both of which are rated as the biggest; a planned systematic renovation made to iron mines, raw material supply and power and utilities systems to the satisfaction of the extra capacity of 2 million tons for stainless steel and 2.5 million tons for carbon steel. The construction for steel making, hot rolling and auxiliary systems is scheduled for completion and operation in June 2006 and that for cold rolling portion will be concluded in two steps;respectively by the end of 2006 and by the first half year of 2007. With all that completed TISCO will top other stainless steel producers in the world for its capacity of stainless steel production totaled up to 3 million tons a year.
